Is Wordpress better than Blogger for SEO? No answer.

If only we had a dollar for each time we were asked this question, or were told that everyone should be using Wordpress because it's far superior to Blogger for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) because of the wealth of SEO plugins available for it.

We'd be rich. So we were pleasantly surprised to watch this video where +Matt Cutts, head of webspam at Google, answers the question "Is Wordpress or Blogger better for SEO?"

And what does he say? That both can rank well and that it comes down to your Content and your Links. You should be focusing less on the SEO "prowess" of your platform and more devoting more focus to developing a user-centric content strategy. Oh, and all of those plugins you've installed? Chances are they're just making your website slower and unstable.

If SEO is your main reason for having your blog on Wordpress we'd like to encourage you to read our post "10 reasons recommending Blogger over Wordpress for most websites". If most/all of your site's needs, minus all of those SEO plugins, can be accomplished on Blogger, why are you wasting money hosting a Wordpress blog and potentially putting your site at risk of being hacked if you miss a security patch?

Just remember, you can do some amazing things with Blogger.

  1. Good points, that´s why I moved to Blogger. Wasted too much time for theming, coding, fixing, updating wordpress. Sometimes I think I´m missing some features, but then I love those "restrictions". I learn to keep thinks more simple, that´s what I always wanted, but too much possibilities let me forget this point.

And there are a lot of possibilities with Blogger and most of them are documented in tutorials.

    Cheers, Can.

  2. I shared this video when I saw it and lots of people were grateful to see it. I think that many people in my niche (blogging) struggle with building links simply because no matter how great your content is, people who like WordPress will link to another WordPress blog before they will link to a Blogger blog. Since I have both kinds of blogs I know this to be true because I see it everyday. I go out of my way to post high value, more content rich posts on my Blogger blog - including podcasts, videos, and SlideShare presentations - however getting quality links from authority sites is still easier with my WordPress blog. But don't worry, that is not going to stop me from using Blogger. I simply love how easy it is write a post compared to my WordPress blog.

  3. Does Blogger have an option to hide or turn off the "Next Blog" button? I found it way to easy for kids to move from a site they were interested in reading to a totally inappropriate site the "Next Blog" away.

  4. Hi Johnny, yes, you can easily disable it (one click) or you can use CSS to hide it.

  5. Blogger is always my first priority. But Blogger do lacks a bit. No I am not talking about SEO. But on structuring the URLs it does lack a bit. We cannot add Child Pages which is the major upset for Blogger Geeks like me. I am really looking forward to see Child Pages. Really I need them badly. Hopefully Blogger team would include this feature sooner or later.

  7. I am new to blogging so I decided to go with wordpress instead of blogger because everyone was telling me how much better wordpress is for seo. I don’t have experience with blogger but I have been very pleased with Wordpress and its ease of use. I still have a lot to learn but I am having a lot of fun with it. Thanks, I enjoy your site! RP
