  3. how do i make the centre column single instead of a two column post? And would like the date to be shown as well.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Hi Anonymous,

    So the two lines in the template you'll need to change are #937 and #939 where you'll see that I divide the areawidth into 2 columns. You can likely change those two lines to make it one column, however that sort of defeats the main aspects of the template!

    With the date, I moved the date information (or you could say limited it) to being in the individual blog posts on purpose; having the date information floating out in space as its own element in the masonry didn't make any sense... so it's now relegated to inside the blog post only where it belongs. However, if you do want it to show, edit line #923 and remove h2.date-header from that list so it's no longer having display: none.

  5. Nice sharp template. I want to show more in the left column -- how can I disable the sliding navigation bar so it simply remains docked at the top of the page? That would allow users to see a long list of pages and links in that area. Thanks!

  6. Hi Daniel,

    Thank you! You can "disable" that by simply removing the JQuery on lines 901 to line 911

  8. Great template - thankyou. Using it here: http://freelance-artworker.blogspot.co.uk/
    Question: If there's no Blogger Navbar - how do I log in to the dashboard etc?
    I'm currently logging in via Google account, but it would be much quicker to log in direct from the homepage. If the Navbar is available I can make it hover/hide using CSS.
    Also how can I remove the small 'home' button in the main post area?

    Thanks again.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hi KK,

    Thank you for the comment! To be honest I've never once used the navbar ever... to login to my sites I always go directly to blogger.com and login there.

    What you could do to remove the "home" link at the bottom of the homepage is to use the conditional for the home type (http://mystady.com/2011/05/7-blogger-page-types-analysis-code.html#home-page-type) in your CSS, then inside it add:
    < style>
    #blog-pager {
    display: none;
    }
    < /style>

  10. Hi Marzuki,

    I'm sorry, you're going to need to do a bit more to get that than I originally stated... and it's going to be a bit tricky.

    In the template, line 959, add:

    $('.post-outer').css('position','relative');

    Also remove "h2.date-header" from line 923.

    That should do it!

    -David

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hi Marzuki (again),

    Ignore that previous post, it only partially fixes the problem. Rather than add the 959 line, I think you're better off simply removing Masonry entirely. You can remove it by removing lines 955 to 958 and the comma at the end of 954. Not exactly where I thought this template was going...

  16. I LOVE this template! I love the simplicity, I love that ther'es not a lot of junk at the top that pushes the content further down the page and I love that the fonts and colors are so easily customizable in Blogger. One question--would it be a simple fix to make the front page only show the first image and a teaser tidbit of text (or two or three images, but NOT all of them) and then if readers want to read the full post they can click on the post title or a "read more" button at the end of the post? My posts tend to be rather image heavy and long and it makes for some unwieldy scrolling. If it's something that would take a lot of development, I'll probably just choose a different template, but I thought I'd just check to see if it was a simple adjustment. Thanks for providing such a lovely free template!

    1. The best/easiest way is simply to use the jump breaks that are part of the Blogger editor. If you're in the Compose view they are the icon that looks like a sheet of paper being ripped in half (horizontally). That inserts a "read more" link and breaks your post into two parts, part one being shown on the index pages, the full post being shown when the viewer clicks on the title or the read more link.

  17. sorry, two more questions--is there a way to add a "blog description" widget to the template? and why are all of my links in UPPERCASE?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can certainly add a blog description widget, simply go to the Layout page in your Blogger Dashboard and add it to the template wherever you'd like it.

      Your links are all uppercase because that was part of the template; you can edit the HTML of the template and search for "uppercase" and remove the line(s) that look like:
      text-transform: uppercase;

    2. Thanks for answering and I solved for other users if they have the same problem, what I did was copy the code and apply LinkWithin my template into a conditional to only appear on the entry and not on the cover. Thanks, here you can see if it worked.

    5. Hi Kath,

      So when you want to add LinkWithin into your site, it creates code in your template. What we want to do is either "not show" the code unless you're on an Item page, or to "hide" it if you're on any page that is not a Item page.

      The easiest method is to add this before your /head in the template: http://pastie.org/4782707

    3. Hi Alden, unfortunately there isn't really a simple solution; that sidebar was put there intentionally with quite a bit of code that would need to be changed in order to both remove it but also fix the columns back to their original orientation. You'll need to work with lines 982 to 988, 994 to 999, and line 1029. In line 1029 I'm changing the width of the #Blog1 div by subtracting 270px, and in 982-988 / 994-999 I'm moving the pager and footer into that 270px wide vacated area.

    Is there any automated way to link the pictures in the home page to their respective posts and not to open up the lightbox when you click on them? I know I can edit the picture html to link to the post but that will be too manual.

    1. Hi Alden,

      There are a two options, so bear with me and let me know which you'd prefer.

      1) you can disable Lightbox (in your settings) which will resort back to the old image behavior.
      2) we can insert a script to kill Lightbox, then change the parent link around the image to go to the post's url.

      Preference?

  26. HI,

    I'm also having the problem with the anonymous person about the video. I've edited the width to fit when you go to the individual post page but on the home page it comes out of the post box and when I make it fit on the home page it's too small on the individual post page. And my blog will rely on the video posts working smoothly since I'll be posting mostly videos. I'm unable to put up my blog url because I've made it private so I can work on it before I officially launch it but I know basic html and I don't see any css or variable definition that works on the video size automatically changing at all, only for the image size. I would appreciate it greatly if you could help me with this, it will make everything so easy for me. I've googled for a tutorials on this so much the keys might pop off.

    3. Hi Abigail,

      Search for:

      $('.post-body').find('img').each(function(n, image){
      var image = $(image);
      var height = image.attr('height');
      var width = image.attr('width');

      var newHeight = (height/width * newwidth).toFixed(0);
      image.attr('width',newwidth).attr('height',newHeight);
      var greater = Math.max(newwidth,newHeight);
      image.attr({src : image.attr('src').replace(/s\B\d{3,4}/,'s' + greater)});
      }),

      Add this after it:

      $('.post-body').find('iframe').each(function(n, iframe){
      var iframe = $(iframe);
      var height = iframe.attr('height');
      var width = iframe.attr('width');

      var newHeight = (height/width * newwidth).toFixed(0);
      iframe.attr('width',newwidth).attr('height',newHeight);
      }),

    1. Hi Ivan,

      Sure is! If you look at lines 906, 963, 1052, what I'm doing is an if/else: if page type = "index", do this, else do something else.

      In the "something else", on lines 1025 to 1032, I'm setting the post body's images to be the full width. If you want you can wrap them in an if/else for the page type of !item or you can take them out entirely.

    1. Hi Ivan,

      The post width on the individual post pages are (area width - left column width - 245 pixels). You can adjust the area width using the Blog Customize tool, and you can also adjust the left column width. The 245 pixels is not so customizable as it's really the smallest that column area can be and still function.

    1. Out of curiosity, how did you turn off the Blogger Navbar? There is a small bug right now with Blogger whereby an unintended side effect of turning the navbar off using their new options of "off" also turns off the quick edit icons.

      Delete
    2. very early on when i started out on blogger I did use a code to get rid of the navbar ontop, but I did replace all my code with your template so I assume that would not matter..but anyway, it appeared in my blogger layout on the side as "navbar" or something to that extent and I removed it. It appeared to be a widget.

      Delete
    3. Hello, I think that the navbar removal is tied to the current bug (with Blogger, not the template) which makes the quick edit icons not show up.

      However, check your template for the following code:

      .post-icons, .post-share-buttons, h2.date-header, .post-labels, .goog-inline-block, .post-share-buttons .goog-inline-block {
      display: none;
      }

      It looks like all of your share icons, quick edit icons, labels, etc. are being hidden. Was that intentional?

      Delete
    4. not intentional and I can see my other icons, the email share, FB, Blog this, pin it, G+ etc. just the quick edit icon, if its a bug by blogger no biggy but i did find the code you were after.

      }
      .post-icons, .post-share-buttons, h2.date-header, .post-labels, .goog-inline-block, .post-share-buttons .goog-inline-block {
      display: none;

      Delete
    5. I wish I could assist, but nothing in the template would cause them to not show. If they're not showing I'm assuming it's either the navbar bug I mentioned, permissions (perhaps you're logged in as multiple google accounts), or some other weirdness.

    Question: Is this setup for custom mobile? It appears so but I'm not sure how to make it work.

    Observation: I noticed your comment above about your credits. I also noticed credits didn't appear in mine, either. Searching the code, I see you've got them "Display: None" by default (div#cf). just FYI

  42. Okay, a couple more questions

    How can you stop the images from resizing? I've tried both of the methods you've mentioned in earlier comments and either I lose the 2 column posts on the main page or the column size is screwed up on post pages (the added right column is pushed out)

    And probably a stupid question, but how do you change the colors of the template?

      Regarding the colors, in your Blogger Dashboard, go to Template -> Customize -> Advanced.

    2. David, I didn't want my images to automatically resize to maximum width. With some trial and error, I found what works the easiest is to comment out/remove the following:
      Line 832 image.attr('width',newwidth).attr('height',newHeight);
      and
      Line 932
      image.attr('width',dimension).attr('height',newHeight);

      If memory serves, line 832 will stop it on the main page (2 column section) and 932 will stop it from resizing within the post page

      As to the colors, using the Advanced tab didn't work for me. But I got most of the color changes figured out.

    How difficult would that be to do?

  44. Hey david! Great template you have made! I only have one question:

    1. Hello, the lines are 930-933:

      var areawidth = $('#Blog1').width();
      var newwidth = ((areawidth/2)-30).toFixed(0);
      $('.post-outer').css('width',newwidth);
      var theColumn = parseFloat(((areawidth/2)-1).toFixed(0));

      Instead of dividing by 2, try dividing by 3 and adjusting as necessary.

    2. That worked out great! Thank you so much! And is there a way to make thumbnail picture link to post when clicked on? Just like title does.

  45. I really like the right sidebar on post pages but I don't want it on static pages. Is there a way to if condition so that the right bar (where the Home, Tags and Share buttons are seen) goes away?

    Thanks

  46. Hi

    I am just starting up using it too. I want to change the title to lower case. I understand I need to add something like text-transform: lowercase; but I am not sure where...

    1. It's in line 793:

      div#Blog1 a {
      text-decoration: none;
      text-transform: uppercase;
      }

      Remove the text-transform: uppercase;

    2. Btw, that image that you have on your 2nd post is 3.7 megs. That is HUGE. I highly recommend hosting your images with Picasa (the default way images that you upload to your blog are stored), but also resize them to a maximum dimension of 1400 pixels (72 resolution) before uploading!

    3. Thanks for the tip about the photos. I was intending on doing it. I am just testing a post.

      I removed the line above completely and it didn't work. I changed it to lowercase and it didn't work either. What am I doing wrong?

  47. Hi, I love the template and I have used it on my blog here: www.FrenchYummyMummy.com.
    Just a little problem: the items on the left column (about me, archives, etc.), can't stay still so my readers can't click on any. As they scroll down and up the page that column moves so that it always settles no lower than the g+. They can't see below the g+ long enough to click on anything. Any advice?
    A big thank you for your help!

  52. Hi David,

    I like the template and I am using it on my blog. I have one question - In the individual post pages, how to we customize the right sidebar? Just below the sharing icons and label (on the right), I would like to display widgets like popular posts, poll, etc. Is this possible? Currently, that space is underutilized.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I have another question. I would like to have the date I post my items and not the time. Currently my post footer says posted by x at time. I know I can change the timsetamp to a datestamp but if I do so, then it says: posted by x at Thursday ... This is not correct. It should say on Thursday... I cannot find anywhere inthe template where to change that text.
    Many thanks

  54. Hi David,

    There is a small issue when I use images. The image resizes appropriately on the home page, but when I use the 'more' tag, the article overlaps with the below one (on the left side of the template). I published a test post, just to push this post on to the right, and there are no problems there.

    Right now, I have pushed the images below the more tag (to sort the problem). If there is something I must test/change to sort it out, it will be great. I have given a link to this page on my sidebar (Theme courtesy).

    dear David Kutcher,if you could add line between the 2 columns just like Facebook. it would be more great.

    nevertheless, this a very good template.

  56. Hi David..
    is it possible with your template to make a template with different width or height for each post? i mean like this one

    http://brand-nouveau.ca/

    1. The template is using Masonry, just like those examples. The examples you posted look a bit more "masonry" because they have more columns, but the same script is what allows the posts in this template to stagger the way they do.

    2. yes i understand what u mean, but i think the columns have different widths and heights.. maybe is what it called "fluid grid masonry" from "vanilla masonry" http://vanilla-masonry.desandro.com/ ...i dont know i am not sure. you know better.Thanks anyway for your time.

  57. Hi,

    Using this as my second option for the new blog.
    Two questions:
    1.) How do I change the text box in the sliding menu bar into a logo like in the rafael morgan studio website?
    2.) How do I remove the header?
    3.) Can you please tell me which line to edit to change the background?

    thanks.

    So far, I'm liking it quite a bit, but I may adjust some things, and send you what I come up with. As far as I'm concerned, that's the least that I can do to thank you properly for the free template. :)

    Well done, and I look forward to seeing more templates from you :)

    Thanks again,

    var newwidth = ((areawidth/2)-30).toFixed(0);

  68. David,

    I think it is good to have this fix. I see sometimes width and height are set in style property by blogger.

    var height = image.attr('height');
    if (typeof height === "undefined")
    height = image.height();

    var width = image.attr('width');
    if (typeof width === "undefined")
    width = image.width();

    Thanks,

  76. How to avoid that "break" when the page loads? The page initialy loaded with one column and then in seconds divide in 2 columns. example http://www.frenchyummymummy.com/

    ReplyDelete
  77. so one thing you can do is set the CSS for .post-outer to be display: none, and then in the script, after masonry occurs, set .post-body to be display: block.

  78. Thanks David, but is a little difficult for me to do this. i don't know where to put this into template

  83. Hello David.

    I would appreciate a little help to set the css to
    avoid that "break" when the page loads (The page initialy loaded with one column and then in seconds divide in 2 columns). In all others the template is perfect. i know little about html. I dont know to set the css for .post-outer to be display: none, and then in the script, after masonry occurs, set .post-body to be display: block.
    Thank you a lot

  86. They are no longer "Post images are dynamically resized to fit the maximum width of the container giving it a clean vertical look" ?

  87. There was a change in the Masonry javascript library.

    Go here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ncemiwfcvdn8a0c/BoyBurnsBlog.xml

    Copy lines 25 to 35 and place them right before in your template.

I've got one problem though...on my "About" page, the picture of myself that I uploaded looks HUGE on the screen...on my other blogger templates it's small...I'd like to have the picture small and the description to the right. Is there a way to do that? Here's the link: http://nflrearwindow.blogspot.com/p/about-me.html
    See how massive my head is? I think it's too much. Thanks!
